The story takes place in the industrial north of England in the mid-19th century. Due to family’s circumstances Margaret Hale moves from Helston, a beautiful village of the south country, to Milton, a dirty and smoky city in the north where cotton manufacturing is the main industry.
There, Margaret meets a wealthy and literate mill owner, Mr Thornton. Caught up in the midst of social turmoil their perceptions of one another are going to be challenged and will change their views of the world forever.

Dear Lydie,
i love your Bookclub! I have wanted to improve my English and read books in English for a long time. Thanks to your daily live readings and the weekly Zoom sessions, I feel very motivated to read books in English and not give up so easily. It is a lot of fun to have conversations about books and feminist issues during the Zoom sessions on Saturdays. I am so thankful that I found your page on Instagram. The content you provide is so helpful.
Love,
Keti, from Germany
I'm an English teacher in France and I love English literature, especially books written by women! I am also the founder of Lydie’s Book Club, in which I host live readings of adaptations of classics of English literature and contemporary novels.
Once a week I meet the members of the book club via Zoom to discuss the chapters read over the week but we also talk about books in general and learning English.
When I was young learning English was very much focused on grammar and it never occured to me that I could READ in English. Or at least, not until I could consider myself fluent. How wrong I was, how misinformed I was... It is only at the age of 23 that I started reading in English for the first time, it was for my own pleasure and guess what... I loved it!
When I became a teacher myself and learned about the power of storytelling in language learning and teaching, I knew I had to create something! With this book club my mission is to show you how much you can learn a language with books and practise your speaking through conversation!
